Politician, philanthropist, medical practitioner and administrator, Arthur Renwick played an important part in Sydney’s history and was very prominent in many activities. He had much to do with the introduction of old age pensions in our State.
Renwick, knighted in 1904, suffered great financial losses and was forced to sell his magnificent home ‘Abbotsford House’ on the Parramatta River and to part with his fine library. The house is still a private residence though surrounded by many waterfront apartments.
Henry Lawson died in a small cottage almost opposite Abbotsford School and a memorial was completed to commemorate this great Australian.
Abbotsford Cove
Abbotsford Cove is now an established suburb in Canada Bay and offers waterfront estate style living. Abbotsford Point
Originally known as Fig Tree Bay, the point was home to a wire netting works.
Always a place of interest, with Abbotsford Wharf, were the public Baths, where for a small charge a pleasant swim could be had in clean tidal water. The ferry called regularly plying between Parramatta, Ryde and the city.
Abbotsford today is an established suburb thought the past few years has seen a huge growth in population due to the developments of new units on redundant industrial sites.
